DreamHack 2007, part 6 – e-sports and the latest CCTV episode

The phenomenon of e-sports is not predominant present at DreamHack, but is undoubtedly interesting to discuss. E-sports is a branch within the gamescene which battled for money. Involve individuals and/or teams, which often consist of the better gamers, competitions for the prizes to be won. The games that have the biggest prize pool to know are Counter-Strike 1.6 (5vs5), Starcraft (1vs1) and Warcraft III (1vs1).

Also at DreamHack, there are competitions organized and can battle for a cash prize. The most money can Counter-Strike be won, the winners of more than 200,000 crowns divide, the euro 21.500 euro. Another remarkable competition is QuakeWorld, a polished version of id Software’s Quake.

Hall C at DreamHack is specially designed for e-sports. So has the hall, a large stage with stand, the so-called Dreamarena, where the spectators of various races. Also, there are stands of, among others, the QuakeWorld tournament, and Intel Extreme Masters.

The audience to the matches watching

In the competitions on DreamHack also do a number of Dutch: with Counter-Strike teams CNO-gaming and Logic. Warcraft III is represented by Manuel ‘Grubby’ Schenkhuizen and QuakeWorld Steven ‘reppie’ Elzinga. The two Dutch teams of Counter-Strike had unfortunately already after a number of rounds in the league, is out: Logic in the third round in the qualifying for the best 32 teams and CNO during the fourth round in the Double Elimination round.

Moreover, Logic and CNO of the best Counter-Strike teams of the Netherlands. Competitive Counter-Strike in the Netherlands is, however, a long way from such a high level as well as in countries such as Sweden or Korea. So, Sweden has a number of teams where the players have to earn their bread with this game. In the Netherlands, there are no teams that have really big money to make money on them, but most teams have sponsors that make it possible for events such as DreamHack to take part.

The Dutch ‘Grubby’ and ‘reppie’ do a lot better. They have both made the final. Reppie is seen as the world’s best QuakeWorld player and he has a chance to make a small 1000 euros to be able to win. However, he is also fourth in the tournament. The Dane ‘Paradoks’ has the first place managed to get hold of. Grubby belongs to the absolute world top of Warcraft III and he has gone home with a ‘skinny’ 3000 euros in prize money. In the top leagues are the amounts for Warcraft III are likely to be many times higher.
